HORTICULTURE


As the name suggests Horticulture is an intensive form of agriculture that includes the cultivation of fruits, flowers, vegetables, medicinal and aromatic plants and spices. It also involves crop development, DNA testing of various crops, insect disease and weed control, crop utilization, pre/post harvest management, storage of produce. The fields covers genetically modified crops and the use of IT in plants.

Qualification

The minimum Qualification should be at least a B.Sc in agriculture. There are Universities that offer diplomas and the Government of India also give training cources to enterpreneurs from time to time.

In a nutshell, if you are trained in plant biology, chemistry, soils, plant pests and disease, computer application, personnel/ business management and the current trends in horticulture, you can be the best in the field.

Help at Hand

Various states in the country have Horticulture Departments, which help intersted parties by holding workshops, training farmers, providing advice etc. Various banks provide loan facilities and other financial assistance as well.

You can design beatuful gardens with trees, shrubs and flowers. Big corporate houses and hotels always need them.

You can be involved in wholesale or retail sale of seeds, garderning supplies, flowers, processed fruits etc.


RESEARCH

You can specialize in plants breeding, nutrition, help in the research work done in various agricultural universities


WRITING

As a trained horticulturist, you can write books, articles for magzines, newspapers and also hold workshops for novices.
