Bhardwaj, A Judicial Magistrate (First Class) was caught after he had accepted a bribe of Rs 7 lakh from a litigant on behalf of the District and Sessions Judge, Jalandhar, Mr RM Gupta. He then slipped away from under the noses of the sleuths.
Sharon wins Israeli polls:
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's Likud party romped to re-election in Israel on a wave of support for his tough line with Palestinians, humiliting leftidt parties that pursued Middle East peace deals. Greeted by flag-waving supporters who burst into song, Sharon claimed victory early on January 29, and urgued parties to join him in a broad coalition to meet the twin challenges of a possible Gulf War and what he called terrorism. Labour Party leader Amram Mitzna conceded defeat.
Havel steps down:
Vaclav Havel stepped down on february 2, as Czech President without a successor, after two deadlocked elections. A joint session of Parliament failed on January 24, in its second attempt in nine days to elect a successor to Havels, a dissident playwright who led his country to freedom from soviet rule in 1989 in the peaceful Velvet Revolution and had since helped shepherd eastern Europe's transition to democracy.
Phaneesh Murthy accused
:
Phaneesh, a former US-based executive of Infosys Technologies Ltd, accused by Reka Maximovitch, a former Infosys employee and filed a sexual harassment case against him in a US court.
Phaneesh Murthy, who played a pivotal role in driving sales in Infosys's prime market, North America, resigned last July after Maximovitch, an ex-employee, filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against the company and Phaneesh, who was her boss. Infosys paid 3 million dollar to Reka for the settlement of case outside the court.Phaneesh Murthy, who now runs a consulting business, said he had agreed to the settlement to avoid spending valuable time on fighting the case against his former subordinate.
Senthil Kumar:,
Senthil Kumar was detained in London by police on March 26, 2003 on a request from the Dutch authorities and sent to judicial custody in one more incident involving harassment of Indian IT professionals abroad.
Fourteen other employees of i-Flex working for the Dutch subsidiary were also told to leave the Netherlands.
The incident created an outcry in the Information Technology industry in the country, leading to a war of words between India and The Netherlands.
