India, Thialand to sign extradition treaty
India recieved full support from Thialand in countering terrorism. At the end of discussions, between the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K Advani and the Thai Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra and Deputy PM, Wissanu KreaNgam at Banhkok on January 31, it was announced that the two countries had "expressed full agreement and willingness" to conclude an extradition treaty. Mr. Advani and Mr. Thaksin discussed issues including an treaties on extradition and mutual legal assistance, operationalising of the Joint Working Group on Security already in existence, an MoU to deal with drug trafficking and counterfeiting of travel documents and currency. The two sides decided to work out a mechanism on intelligence sharing and strengthening cooperation in these areas.
Extradition treaty with Poland
The visiting Prime Minister of Poland, Leszek Miller, signed on February 17, an extradition treaty with India, along with another to combat international terrorism and organised crime, and one on defence cooperation. The visit is designed to mend fences with Poland, which is already a part of NATO, and is set to join the European Union shortly. Significance is being attached to the defence agreement under which the two countries will exchange experience in the field of military planning and training of military personnel; maintain peace and fight against terrorism; exchange information and help eachother in the supply and modernisation of armament and military equipment along other things.
India, France sign extradition treaty
On January 24, India signed an Extradition Treaty with France. Both sides described the move as reflecting the determination of the two nations to unitedly fight terrorism and other forms of crime. Deputy Prime Minister L.K Advani signed the Treaty at Paris along with French Justice Minister Dominique Perben.
Extradition treaty with Qatar
Deputy Prime Ministers L.K Advani had bilateral meeting in Qatar with the foreign Minister and a key Political player in this natural gas rich Gulf Country, Sheikh Hamad bin Jasim bin Jabir Ali Thani, on January 21. Issues ranging from the threat of terrorism to the concerns of the large Indian population in Qatar were discussed. It was agreed that the pending issues of an extradition treaty, a mutual legal assistance treaty and a joint working group on counter-terrorism would be finalised soon. Mr. Advani briefed the Qatar Minister about Pakistan's continuing support to cross-border terrorism. The Qatar Minister took the view that it had independent relations with both the countries and that "its relation with Pakistan did not impinge on its relations with India". In course of his meeting with the ruler of Qatar SHeikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-thani. Mr. Advani apprised him of Pakistan's sponsership of terrorism from across the border. Qatar assured India that the interest of the expatriate Indian community in Qatar will be taken care of in case of any actions against Iraq.
