SOCIAL WORK Social work as opposed to special service is a professional stream and involves a lot of research and ground work. Its not just about slums. This is a field with which national and international organisations are associated. Right from the spade work to finding solutions, social work throws up a whole lot of opportunities. Courses Offered The Lucknow University offering the Masters in Social Work course, the most well received programme of the Social Work Department. This two years course involves extensive field work. Also being offered is a Masters in Naturopathic Sciences, which deals with the various new Naturopathy techniques. last year the department has started two new courses, namely Masters in Population Education and Masters in World Development. MA in Criminology is another one of our courses. Incidentally, three month certificate courses in Yoga, which the department runs, have been quite a success with some elderly people. Placement Opportunities After finishing the course an MSW graduate can expect jobs in national and international NGOs. The initial salary may vary from Rs 4,000 to Rs 12,000. Growth in this discipline is phenomenal. Achievements of Social Work Department They got a National Award in Youth Parliament in 2002. They have also notched 4 stars in the ratings conducted by the National Accredition Council. The students of the department keep liasoning with UNICEF, UNDP, Central Social Worker Board regularly on projects. Future Plans of Social Work Department They have decided to adopt a village in Chinhat called Semra with a population of 1,400 people. Mostly weaker section of the society lives here. They would be launching education camps, health programmes, legal literacy campaigns and immunisation programmes in this village. An urban slum in Baraf Khana may also be taken up for a similar project. Besides, they've talked with SUDA and at the district level with DUDA, to send their students to work in urban slums, formally. |
