ARCHIVAL DIPLOMA


The year 1891 was the year that the National Archives of India (now in Delhi) was established in Kolkata. Back then, it was known as the Imperial Record Department-till independence. The need to meet the demands of trained custodians culminated in training courses in Archives Keeping Training was set up in the 1976 and was renamed the School of Archival Studies in 1980.


Objectives

Today, the School has a number of courses for both professionals and amateurs. The courses offered are for both sponsered and private candidates and are real for archivists, record managers, preservationists and microphotographists. The School covers both the theoretical and practical aspects of the courses and includes seminars, workshops and extensions lectures by distinguished Archivists, Preservationists and Microphotographists from well-known institutions and universities.


Courses

Diploma in Archival Studies

This course trains candidates in different disciplines of Archival Studies such as Record Management, COnservation, Reprography and Information Sciences. Both private and sponsered (Indian and foreign) candidates are eligible for the course. However private candidates have to appear for anaptitude test followedby an Interview. The minimum educational qualification is MA (History) with minimum 50% marks in aggregate from a recognised university, with atleast one optional paper in Modern Indian History (post 1750 period), if the candidate is an indian citizen. For foreign students the eligibility is gradutaion from a recognised university. The admission will be according to the decision of a selection committe. For both Indians and foreign nationals, the upper age limit is 50. Diploma is of one duration and runs from november till octber every year.


Short Term Certificate Courses

Archives Administration

This is to create conciousness among trainee about acquisition, arrangement, upkeep and retreival of records. A Graduate (below 50) in any discipline from a recognised university is eligible for the six week course (February-March).

Records Management

The Four week course (Twice a year- May and September) aims to train candidates in creation, control and disposition of records. A graduate in any decipline below the age of 50 can apply.

Reprographics is especially meant to educate peolple in the process of reproduction of documents and manuscripts, microfilming, handling of automated information storage, retreival and dissemination. A second class graduate from a recognised university in Science (preferably) below the age of 50 can do this six week course (twice in July-August and November-December).

Care and Conservation of Books, Manuscripts and Archives and servicing and Repair of Records (a course for amateurs) are two other courses both of a six week duration. However, th eeleigible criteria differ. For the former course, a second class graduate in Science (preferably) is entitled to do the course and for the latter high school knowledge of English /Hindi is sufficent.
